Aurifil thread is a long staple that refers to the length of the fibers in raw cotton Boll, the length of the fiber determines the quality of the cotton.
Is Aurifil thread organic?
Although Aurifil threads are not organic, they are Oeko-Tex certified. Oeko-Tex certification is related to the processing of the product, including the colors and finishing materials used. It means that the yarns are certified free of harmful chemicals and completely safe for humans. Or…in quilting terms, you and your loved ones can wrap up carefree in these lovingly stitched blankets!
Is Aurifil thread waxed or coated?
Aurifil thread is not waxed, but is passed through transparent paraffin oil during the winding process. This treatment ultimately helps the thread slide through the machine. It doesn't leave any kind of residue, it just adds functionality to ensure the end user's ease of use as much as possible.
How do you measure the weight of cotton?
The weight of the Aurifil thread is determined by the number of England or Ne. They are a measure of linear density and refer to the number of skeins (840 yards or 770 m) of skein material that weigh 1 lb. For example, 50 threads (42,000 yd or 38,500 m) or 50 wt thread (Ne 50) weighs 1 pound. In this system, the higher the number, the finer the thread.
Why would you use threads 50wt over 40wt?
Aurifil's 50wt thread is thinner than their 40wt, making it ideal for piercing. This thinness provides smoother and more precise seams, resulting in a truly professional end product. When it comes to quilting, 50wt is a fantastic choice as it sinks into fabrics and creates perfect precision without being overwhelming, allowing the piecing to become the star of the show!
What is the best weight for quilting?
The best quilting weight really depends on the type of quilting you want to achieve: 80 wt allows for very fine detailing; 50wt offers a nice subtle effect that lets the pieces shine; 40wt offers better stitch precision while still emphasizing the cut; 28wt by machine lets your stitching shine with bold results and by hand creates a beautiful texture; 12wt is our favorite for large stitch hand quilting.
What is the best weight for chopping?
Aurifil's 50wt thread is the ideal weight for basting as it results in flat, non-bulky seams. It's a fine, strong thread that practically disappears.
